Dow Jones Industrial Average cultural definition

An index of the relative price movement of the shares of thirty major industrial companies, most of which are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Changes in the average (noted as “rises” and “falls”) give investors a general picture of the state of the market. Often referred to as “the Dow.”
