A twentieth-century Irish author known for his novels, especially Finnegans Wake, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses, and for his short stories, especially the collection Dubliners.

• Ulysses, a novel revolutionary in its form, is almost entirely concerned with the actions and thoughts of three characters on a single day. (See Ulysses under “Mythology and Folklore.”)
